List of titles and honours of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn

This is a list of the titles and honours held by Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn (1 May 1850 – 16 January 1942), a senior officer of the British Army, sometime Governor-General of Canada, and member of the British Royal Family as third son of Queen Victoria.

Name and titles

Name

On 22 June 1850 Prince Arthur was baptised in the Chapel at Buckingham Palace with the Christian names Arthur William Patrick Albert.[1] As a member of the Royal Family, he had no surname[2] until 17 July 1917, when a Royal Proclamation of King George V declared that all British descendants in the male line of Queen Victoria would bear the name of Windsor.[3]

Arms

The Duke of Connaught's coat of arms was granted in 1874[10] and in common with other members of the Royal Family was based on the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom.

Arms

Quarterly first and fourth gules three lions passant guardant in pale or (England) second or a lion rampant gules within a double tressure flory counterflory gules (Scotland) third azure a harp or stringed argent (Ireland) over all an escutcheon barry of ten or and sable a crown of rue in bend vert (Saxony) the whole differenced by a label of three points argent the centre point charged with a cross gules and each of the other points with a fleur-de-lis azure.[8]

The escutcheon of Saxony was removed by Royal Warrant of 12 September 1917.[11]

Coronet

A Royal Warrant of Charles II dated 9 February 1661 assigned to the sons and brothers of the Sovereign a coronet composed of crosses pattée and fleurs-de-lis. This was confirmed for all children of the Sovereign by a Royal Warrant of George V on 19 November 1917.[11]

Crest

On a coronet composed of crosses pattée and fleurs-de-lis a lion statant guardant or crowned with a like coronet and differenced with a label of three points as in the arms[8]

Supporters

Dexter a lion rampant gardant or crowned as the crest sinister a unicorn argent armed crined and unguled proper gorged with a like coronet a chain affixed thereto passing between the forelegs and reflexed over the back also or both differenced with a label of three points as in the arms[8]

The shield of arms was encircled by the Order of the Garter.
